Professor Sabiha Essack (B. Pharm., M. Pharm., PhD) is a distinguished academic in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, currently serving as a Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa. She holds the South African Research Chair in Antibiotic Resistance and One Health, a position that underscores her leadership in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a holistic, One Health approach .
Her research focuses on the molecular epidemiology of AMR, utilizing next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics to understand resistance patterns across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Professor Essack has established the Antimicrobial Research Unit at UKZN and has secured numerous research grants from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), and the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) . She is also an expert consultant on AMR to the WHO and serves on various national and international advisory boards, including the Global Respiratory Infection Partnership (GRIP) and the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) .
