Overview
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences comprises a number of PHD holders faculty members, supported by technicians and laboratory supervisors. Chemistry is the primary focus of the department’s teaching responsibilities, spanning five years in the Bachelor of Pharmacy program and six years in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Core subjects include pharmaceutical organic chemistry, pharmaceutical analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical instrumental analysis, medicinal chemistry, and natural products chemistry, and phytochemistry, providing comprehensive knowledge in applied pharmaceutical chemistry. Theoretical concepts are reinforced through practical experiments conducted in four teaching laboratories. Elective subjects cover advanced topics such as toxic plants, therapy with natural products and medicinal plants, as well as applied chromatography. Department members also provide up-to-date and advanced knowledge in pharmaceutical chemistry and natural products chemistry for master’s and doctoral students in pharmaceutical sciences.
The department has achieved notable success in scientific research in the fields of organic chemistry, analytical and medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, and pharmaceutical chemistry. Numerous research funding sources are available, including the Deanship of Scientific Research at the University of Jordan, the Hamdi Manko Center for Scientific Research, the Higher Council for Science and Technology, and the Scientific Research Fund. Research activities are concentrated in three main areas: medicinal chemistry and drug and narcotic discovery from natural sources, pharmaceutical analysis, and computer-aided drug design. These activities take place in four laboratories equipped with the latest technologies essential for advanced scientific research. The department offers advanced analytical facilities such as GC-MS, HPLC and UV-Vis analysis. Additionally, faculty members provide consultancy services through collaborations with the local pharmaceutical industry, the Jordan Pharmacists Association, and the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA).
